CentOS（Community Enterprise Operating System）是一個已停止開發的Linux發行版，其功能與上游原始碼專案Red Hat Enterprise Linux（RHEL）相容。因此有些要求高度穩定性的伺服器以CentOS替代商業版的RHEL使用。兩者的不同，在於CentOS不包含封閉原始碼軟件。CentOS 對上游代碼的主要修改是為了移除不能自由使用的商標。[2]CentOS和RHEL一樣，都可以使用Fedora EPEL來補足軟件。2014年1月，CentOS宣布與Red Hat合作[3]，同時不受RHEL的影響[4]，CentOS將會在新的委員會下繼續運作[5][6]

CentOS 的首個版本於 2004 年 5 月發布，版本號為 CentOS 2，它是從 RHEL 2.1AS 分支而來的。[7] 從 8 版本開始，CentOS 正式支援 x86-64、ARM64 和 POWER8 架構，而截至 6 版本的發行版也支援 IA-32 架構。截至 2015 年 12 月，CentOS 7 的 AltArch 版本已支援 IA-32 架構、Power ISA，以及 ARM架構的 ARMv7hl 和 AArch64 變體。[8][9] CentOS 8 於 2019 年 9 月 24 日發布。[10]

2020年12月8日，紅帽公司單方面終止CentOS的開發，並推出了位於RHEL上游的CentOS Stream。2021年3月，CloudLinux發布了一個名為AlmaLinux的Red Hat Enterprise Linux衍生版本。2021年5月，CentOS的創始人之一（Gregory Kurtzer）建立了Rocky Linux專案，以繼承CentOS的原始目標。

歷史

CentOS 起源於 CAOS Linux 的一個構建版本。CAOS Linux 是一個基於 RPM 的 Linux發行版，由 Gregory Kurtzer 於 2002 年啟動。[11][12][13] Infiscale 將其 GravityOS 描述為「包含了 Caos 的小巧佔用空間」，[14] 這表明該專案在一定程度上受到了這一已停止維護的發行版的影響。

2006 年 6 月，Tao Linux（另一個 RHEL 克隆發行版）的主要開發者 David Parsley 宣布 Tao Linux 將停止開發，並將其併入 CentOS 的開發工作。Tao Linux 用戶通過執行 yum update 遷移至 CentOS 發行版。[15]

2009 年 7 月，CentOS 專案網站發布的一封公開信稱，CentOS 的創始人之一 Lance Davis 於 2008 年失蹤。Davis 此後停止了對專案的貢獻，但仍持有 CentOS 域名和 PayPal 帳戶的註冊權。2009 年 8 月，據報道 CentOS 團隊與 Davis 取得了聯絡，並獲得了 centos.info 和 centos.org 這兩個域名。[16]

2010 年 7 月，CentOS 超越 Debian，成為最受歡迎的 Web 伺服器 Linux 發行版，全球近 30% 的 Linux Web 伺服器使用 CentOS。[17] 2012 年 1 月，Debian 重新奪回了領先地位。[18]

設計

CentOS 開發者使用 Red Hat 的原始碼，建立出與 RHEL 非常相似的最終產品。由於 Red Hat 不允許其品牌標識和徽標被重新分發，因此 CentOS 會對其進行修改。[28] CentOS 可免費使用。技術支援主要由社群通過官方郵寄清單、網絡討論區和聊天室提供。

該專案與 Red Hat 有關聯，但致力於打造一個更加公開、開放和包容的社群。儘管 Red Hat 聘用了 CentOS 的大多數核心開發者，CentOS 專案本身仍依靠用戶和組織贊助者的捐贈維持運作。[4]

版本與發布

7.0版本之前的CentOS版本號有兩個部份，一個主要版本和一個次要版本，主要和次要版本號分別對應於RHEL的主要版本與更新套件，CentOS採取從RHEL的原始碼套件來構建。例如，CentOS 6.5 是基於 RHEL 6 更新 5（亦稱 RHEL 6.5 版本）的原始碼軟件套件構建的，而 RHEL 6.5 是 RHEL 6 的一個所謂「點版本」。[29]

從 7.0 版本開始，CentOS 的版本號還增加了第三部分，用於表示該發行版所基於的原始碼的月份標記。例如，版本號 7.0-1406 仍表示該 CentOS 發行版對應於 RHEL 7 的第 0 個更新集，而「1406」則表示該發行版所基於的原始碼來自 2014 年 6 月。使用月份標記可以重新發布安裝映像，以適應（截至 2014 年 7 月）即將推出的容器和雲平台版本，同時保持與相關基礎發行版本號的對應關係。[30]

自2006年中，CentOS 4.4版本開始（前身為RHEL 4.0更新第4版），Red Hat採用了和CentOS完全相同的版本約定，例如：Red Hat 4.5。

2019年9月10日，CentOS推遲了CentOS 8.1的工作，轉而開發CentOS 7.7，因為CentOS 7.x仍在生產中，而CentOS 8.x尚未投入生產。CentOS 7.7發布後，資源回歸CentOS 8.0。

CentOS 8在2019年9月24日發布，此版本與之前的套件庫不同，主要分為兩個，分別為BaseOS和AppStream，並且開始使用dnf作為管理套件的程式。

CentOS於2021年底停止發布，其最終版本為 8.5（2021-11-16），之後僅維護CentOS Stream[31]，使其變為滾動發行的散佈版（CentOS 7仍將持續維護至原本的支援週期結束）。

特別興趣小組

特別興趣小組（SIG）是 CentOS 社群中組織化的團隊，旨在為構建滿足特定需求的 CentOS 客製化變體提供途徑。各 SIG 可自由地以多種方式修改和增強 CentOS，包括添加更前沿的軟件、根據需求重新構建現有軟件套件、提供其他桌面環境，或使 CentOS 能夠執行於原本不受支援的硬件架構上。[139]

架構

截至 8 版本，CentOS 完全支援 x86-64、POWER8 和 64 位 ARM 架構，[140]但不支援以下架構：

截至 2015 年 12 月，CentOS 7 的 AltArch 版本已支援 ARM架構的 ARMv7hl 和 AArch64 變體，[9]並計劃支援 ARM 架構的其他變體。ARM 支援工作由社群推動，並通過 AltArch 特別興趣小組（SIG）進行協調。[9][141] CentOS 7 的 AltArch 版本還支援 IA-32 架構和 Power ISA（POWER7 和 POWER8 晶片）。[8]

CentOS 的 Live CD 版本可從 mirror.centos.org 取得。用戶可以手動建立 CentOS 的可啟動 Live USB 映像，也可以使用 UNetbootin 建立。

CentOS 還提供適用於 Amazon EC2的映像，形式為預先構建並已發布的 Amazon Machine Image（AMI）。[142][143]

軟件倉庫

CentOS 主要有三個軟件倉庫（亦稱軟件頻道），其中包含構成 CentOS 主發行版的軟件套件：[144]

  • base：包含構成 CentOS 各點版本的軟​​件包，並在相應點版本正式以 ISO 映像形式發布時更新。
  • updates：包含在各點版本的常規更新集之間發布的安全更新、錯誤修復更新和功能增強更新。通過此倉庫發布的錯誤修復和功能增強更新，僅限於不適合通過下文介紹的 CentOS-Fasttrack 倉庫發布的更新。[145][146]
  • addons：提供構建 CentOS 主發行版軟件套件所需、但上游未提供的軟件套件。

CentOS 專案還提供了若干額外的軟件倉庫，其中包含預設的 base 和 updates 倉庫未提供的軟件套件。這些倉庫包括：[147]

  • CentOS Extras：包含用於擴充 CentOS 功能的軟件套件，同時不會破壞其與上游的相容性，也不會更新基礎組件。
