CentOS（Community Enterprise Operating System）是一个已停止开发的Linux发行版，其功能与上游源代码项目Red Hat Enterprise Linux（RHEL）兼容。因此有些要求高度穩定性的伺服器以CentOS替代商業版的RHEL使用。兩者的不同，在於CentOS不包含封闭原始碼軟體。CentOS 对上游代码的主要修改是为了移除不能自由使用的商标。[2]CentOS和RHEL一样，都可以使用Fedora EPEL来补足软件。2014年1月，CentOS宣布与Red Hat合作[3]，同时不受RHEL的影响[4]，CentOS将会在新的委员会下继续运作[5][6]

CentOS 的首个版本于 2004 年 5 月发布，版本号为 CentOS 2，它是从 RHEL 2.1AS 分支而来的。[7] 从 8 版本开始，CentOS 正式支持 x86-64、ARM64 和 POWER8 架构，而截至 6 版本的发行版也支持 IA-32 架构。截至 2015 年 12 月，CentOS 7 的 AltArch 版本已支持 IA-32 架构、Power ISA，以及 ARM架构的 ARMv7hl 和 AArch64 变体。[8][9] CentOS 8 于 2019 年 9 月 24 日发布。[10]

2020年12月8日，红帽公司单方面终止CentOS的开发，并推出了位于RHEL上游的CentOS Stream。2021年3月，CloudLinux发布了一个名为AlmaLinux的Red Hat Enterprise Linux衍生版本。2021年5月，CentOS的创始人之一（Gregory Kurtzer）创建了Rocky Linux项目，以继承CentOS的原始目标。

历史

CentOS 起源于 CAOS Linux 的一个构建版本。CAOS Linux 是一个基于 RPM 的 Linux发行版，由 Gregory Kurtzer 于 2002 年启动。[11][12][13] Infiscale 将其 GravityOS 描述为「包含了 Caos 的小巧占用空间」，[14] 这表明该项目在一定程度上受到了这一已停止维护的发行版的影响。

2006 年 6 月，Tao Linux（另一个 RHEL 克隆发行版）的主要开发者 David Parsley 宣布 Tao Linux 将停止开发，并将其并入 CentOS 的开发工作。Tao Linux 用户通过执行 yum update 迁移至 CentOS 发行版。[15]

2009 年 7 月，CentOS 项目网站发布的一封公开信称，CentOS 的创始人之一 Lance Davis 于 2008 年失踪。Davis 此后停止了对项目的贡献，但仍持有 CentOS 域名和 PayPal 账户的注册权。2009 年 8 月，据报道 CentOS 团队与 Davis 取得了联系，并获得了 centos.info 和 centos.org 这两个域名。[16]

设计

CentOS 开发者使用 Red Hat 的源代码，创建出与 RHEL 非常相似的最终产品。由于 Red Hat 不允许其品牌标识和徽标被重新分发，因此 CentOS 会对其进行修改。[28] CentOS 可免费使用。技术支持主要由社区通过官方邮件列表、网络论坛和聊天室提供。

该项目与 Red Hat 有关联，但致力于打造一个更加公开、开放和包容的社区。尽管 Red Hat 聘用了 CentOS 的大多数核心开发者，CentOS 项目本身仍依靠用户和组织赞助者的捐赠维持运作。[4]

版本与发布

7.0版本之前的CentOS版本號有兩個部份，一個主要版本和一個次要版本，主要和次要版本號分別對應於RHEL的主要版本與更新套件，CentOS採取從RHEL的原始碼套件來構建。例如，CentOS 6.5 是基于 RHEL 6 更新 5（亦称 RHEL 6.5 版本）的源代码软件包构建的，而 RHEL 6.5 是 RHEL 6 的一个所谓「点版本」。[29]

从 7.0 版本开始，CentOS 的版本号还增加了第三部分，用于表示该发行版所基于的源代码的月份标记。例如，版本号 7.0-1406 仍表示该 CentOS 发行版对应于 RHEL 7 的第 0 个更新集，而「1406」则表示该发行版所基于的源代码来自 2014 年 6 月。使用月份标记可以重新发布安装映像，以适应（截至 2014 年 7 月）即将推出的容器和云平台版本，同时保持与相关基础发行版本号的对应关系。[30]

自2006年中，CentOS 4.4版本開始（前身為RHEL 4.0更新第4版），Red Hat采用了和CentOS完全相同的版本约定，例如：Red Hat 4.5。

2019年9月10日，CentOS推迟了CentOS 8.1的工作，转而开发CentOS 7.7，因为CentOS 7.x仍在生产中，而CentOS 8.x尚未投入生产。CentOS 7.7发布后，资源回归CentOS 8.0。

CentOS 8在2019年9月24日發布，此版本與之前的套件庫不同，主要分為兩個，分别為BaseOS和AppStream，並且開始使用dnf作為管理套件的程式。

CentOS于2021年底停止发布，其最终版本为 8.5（2021-11-16），之後僅維護CentOS Stream[31]，使其變為滾動發行的散佈版（CentOS 7仍將持續維護至原本的支援週期結束）。

特别兴趣小组（SIG）是 CentOS 社区中组织化的团队，旨在为构建满足特定需求的 CentOS 定制变体提供途径。各 SIG 可自由地以多种方式修改和增强 CentOS，包括添加更前沿的软件、根据需求重新构建现有软件包、提供其他桌面环境，或使 CentOS 能够运行于原本不受支持的硬件架构上。[139]

架構

截至 8 版本，CentOS 完全支持 x86-64、POWER8 和 64 位 ARM 架构，[140]但不支持以下架构：

截至 2015 年 12 月，CentOS 7 的 AltArch 版本已支持 ARM架构的 ARMv7hl 和 AArch64 变体，[9]并计划支持 ARM 架构的其他变体。ARM 支持工作由社区推动，并通过 AltArch 特别兴趣小组（SIG）进行协调。[9][141] CentOS 7 的 AltArch 版本还支持 IA-32 架构和 Power ISA（POWER7 和 POWER8 芯片）。[8]

CentOS 的 Live CD 版本可从 mirror.centos.org 获取。用户可以手动创建 CentOS 的可启动 Live USB 映像，也可以使用 UNetbootin 创建。

CentOS 还提供适用于 Amazon EC2的映像，形式为预先构建并已发布的 Amazon Machine Image（AMI）。[142][143]

软件仓库

CentOS 主要有三个软件仓库（亦称软件频道），其中包含构成 CentOS 主发行版的软件包：[144]

  • base：包含构成 CentOS 各点版本的软​​件包，并在相应点版本正式以 ISO 映像形式发布时更新。
  • updates：包含在各点版本的常规更新集之间发布的安全更新、错误修复更新和功能增强更新。通过此仓库发布的错误修复和功能增强更新，仅限于不适合通过下文介绍的 CentOS-Fasttrack 仓库发布的更新。[145][146]
  • addons：提供构建 CentOS 主发行版软件包所需、但上游未提供的软件包。

CentOS 项目还提供了若干额外的软件仓库，其中包含默认的 base 和 updates 仓库未提供的软件包。这些仓库包括：[147]

  • CentOS Extras：包含用于扩展 CentOS 功能的软件包，同时不会破坏其与上游的兼容性，也不会更新基础组件。
